About Asma Baig

+

Asma Baig is a contemporary abstract artist and sculptor based in Karachi, with over 15 years of dedicated artistic practice. A graduate of the Karachi School of Arts (Class of 1998), she also serves as a faculty member in the Department of Visual Studies at the University of Karachi, where she has been a valued educator for over eight years. Asma’s art moves beyond representation, using vivid colour, layered textures, and dynamic lines to evoke memory, emotion, and the ever-shifting nature of human experience. With 15 years of artistic dedication, Asma’s work has been showcased in a wide range of national and international exhibitions. Her notable shows include **Tasalsul** at the Art Council (2026), **Bandah Ali Awards – Season 2** at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (2026), and **The Raw Line of Life** at Studio Seven (2026). Her work was also featured in **Roll Call III** at Artciti Art Gallery (2025), **Pakistan Culture** (Online, 2025), **Sevasadan** at Alliance Française (2025), and **Echoes of Her Voices** at Studio Seven (2025). Additional exhibitions include **Feminist’s Charisma IV & V** and **Feminist’s Charisma VI** at Artciti Art Gallery, **Kalakar** at Bobby Art Gallery (2025), and the **78th Independence Pakistan Day Festival** in Houston (2025). In every exhibition, her abstract language forms a vivid, personal dialogue with audiences, inviting them into a space of introspection. Asma Baig’s creative process is rooted in her exploration of abstraction as a means to access emotion and memory. She does not depict specific subjects but, instead, uses colour, gesture, and layered surfaces to evoke internal landscapes. Bold colour fields often meet restrained monochromes, and linear divisions within the composition serve as pathways and barriers, mirroring life’s transitions and struggles. Each piece unfolds intuitively, as she balances spontaneity with careful composition, allowing viewers to enter a space of quiet tension, movement, and personal reflection.

How Asma Baig works

**How I Work** My artistic process is both intuitive and deliberate. I begin without a fixed image in mind, allowing each work to develop naturally through colour, texture, gesture, and layered surfaces. Through a process of building, erasing, and reworking, I create compositions that evolve over time, leaving visible traces of transformation and discovery. These layers become an important part of the work, carrying a sense of memory, movement, and emotional depth. Colour and line play a central role in my practice. Bold colour fields, textured surfaces, and structured linear elements create a balance between energy and restraint. The lines often symbolize obstacles, transitions, and pathways within human experience, while expressive marks introduce spontaneity and emotion. Through abstraction, I aim to create open-ended visual spaces that invite viewers to connect with the work through their own feelings, memories, and interpretations.
