About Maryam
+
Maryam is a Karachi-based self-taught abstract artist whose practice is rooted in intuition, emotion, and the quiet spaces between what is seen and felt. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, she builds richly layered compositions that explore depth, memory, and the unspoken. Rather than offering fixed narratives, her paintings invite viewers to pause, reflect, and discover their own meanings within the work. For Maryam, abstraction is both a language and a process of inquiry. Guided by instinct rather than predetermined forms, her work unfolds organically, shaped by movement, mood, and lived experience. Each painting becomes a personal meditation on the human condition, balancing spontaneity with thoughtful exploration. Although self-taught, Maryam has developed a distinctive visual language that has earned recognition within Pakistan's contemporary art community. Her work has been featured in several group exhibitions and has been acknowledged by the Sindh Cultural Department. Her practice has also gained international recognition. Her work was exhibited at Art Fait Gallery in London, where she received top honors in the gallery's art competition, leading to a featured presentation in its 3D virtual gallery. In addition, her work was showcased during a two-day international exhibition that was live-streamed to 57 Islamic chambers across Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, introducing her practice to a broad global audience.
How Maryam works
Every bespoke piece begins with the story behind it. Before I paint, I spend time understanding the brief and, more importantly, thinking about the person who will eventually stand in front of the finished work. My goal is to create a painting that communicates its message and emotion so clearly that even someone who has never read the brief can feel and understand it. I work primarily with acrylics, oil paints, oil pastels, and mixed media on canvas, canvas pads, and paper, choosing materials that best suit the concept and mood of each piece. The time required varies depending on the scale, level of detail, and complexity of the artwork. Some pieces come together in just a few days, while others evolve over several weeks or even months, allowing each work to develop at its own pace.
