About the piece
This watercolor is executed using a combination of direct watercolor washes and ink line drawing. The composition is built with loose yet confident pen lines that define architectural structure, followed by transparent watercolor layers to establish light, depth, and atmosphere. A limited, earthy palette—ochres, burnt sienna, warm greys, and muted blues—captures the aged masonry of the gate, while selective use of stronger color accents (the vendor’s umbrella and market elements) introduces visual rhythm and human presence. Wet-on-wet washes are used for the sky and architectural planes, allowing soft transitions and natural textures, while wet-on-dry techniques sharpen details in figures and foreground objects. Negative space is intentionally preserved, especially in the lower foreground, enhancing luminosity and guiding the viewer’s eye toward the central archway. The overall approach reflects an urban sketching sensibility, balancing spontaneity with architectural accuracy.
